Perfect composting locations
The ideal location is semi-shaded, protected from the wind and provides room for collecting, sorting, shredding and composting. A water supply, a mains power connection and close proximity to the house and to the vegetable garden are advantageous. There should be sufficient room for at least two or, better, three silos. One of each of the following:
- Collecting container for organic waste
- Composting silo for decomposition
- Container for finished compost.
Compost silos should have a capacity of approx. 1 m³, so that the appropriate heat of decomposition can be generated in the centre (up to 70º with the correct mixture and climatic conditions). If composting is carried out correctly, there are no unpleasant odours or vermin.
Advantage:
Easily expandable, no investment, ideal for large volumes.
Please note:
High space requirement: Width of 1 to 2 m, length as required.
Tip:
Cover with perforated foil so that the supply of moisture and air is regulated.
Advantage:
Low space requirement, low cost, self-construction possible.
Please note:
Large surface promotes drying out. Removal of compost from lower layers is difficult.
Advantage:
Low space requirement, low cost, self-construction possible.
Please note:
Danger of drying out if spacing of bars is too great. Removal of compost from lower layers is difficult.
Tip:
They are suitable as collecting silos when covered to protect against rain.
Advantage:
They require little space. Only very slight cooling takes place due to the closed design. Possibility of compost removal near to the ground through built-in openings.
Please note:
Higher cost price; decomposition management requires greater attention with closed versions. Aeration and balanced humidity are necessary.
